MICHAEL HUTCHISON – LEIGH STEINBERG ON CREDIBILITY LIVE

YouTube Poster

Leigh Steinberg was the inspiration for Tom Cruise’s character in the movie “Jerry Maguire.”

He is the premier agent in sports. He has negotiated over $2 billion in contracts for the athletes he represents — who include Troy Aikman, Steve Young, Drew Bledsoe, Kordell Stewart, and Warren Moon.

What’s even more impressive is that Steinberg’s clients have donated over $600 million to hundreds of charities and scholarships nationwide.

Join me as my friends at Dun & Bradstreet Credibility Corp welcome super agent and sports attorney Leigh Steinberg to our CredibilityLIVE show

If you could sit down and chat with a man who has negotiated over $2billion and whose clients have given away $600 million, what would you ask? You’ll get to do exactly that when you register here now:

Steinberg’s philosophy of ethical dealings and responsibility is well known in the sports world–and well known to moviegoers as well, because Steinberg’s way of doing business was a model for Cameron Crowe’s wildly successful film Jerry Maguire and the “manifesto” of business ethics that was the premise of the film.

“It’s fashionable now, after the movie, for a lot of agents to talk about heart, but Leigh was the only one talking like that when I began research.”

— Cameron Crowe, director of Jerry Maguire

I first met Leigh last May 2011 in LA.

We were attending the same Speakers and Authors Networking Group (SANG) annual event.

I left my notebook in the main seminar room and ran back and bumped into him. I asked Leigh if he had dinner plans and he said no. What a chance opportunity!

When I graduated from college, I thought I wanted to be a sports marketing agent. In fact I interviewed with the founders of Advantage International.

One of my college roommates and closest friends Terry Prince is general counsel for CAA Sports. Previously, Terry worked for Mark McCormack’s International Management Group (IMG). Mark is the author of What They Don’t Teach You at Harvard Business School.

Steinberg takes a holistic view on the art of negotiation. This will be a session about the process of negotiation–which means that this is an interview about life….

In our interview, I have asked Leigh to lay out his value-driven negotiating techniques in a step-by-step process.

Too many people would rather simply give up what they want. They would rather avoid the discomfort of possible conflict by accepting a situation or terms without discussion, even when it means accepting less than they rightfully deserve or desire.

Steinberg will share the secrets of successful negotiation, breaking the process down into the essential steps, from “Orientation” through “Making the Deal,” and giving step-by-step practical and inspirational advice that will get any two people or parties, in any situation, to come to terms.

And not surprisingly, he will enliven his advice with colorful and entertaining stories taken from his dealings with notable adversaries ranging from the NFL’s Jerry Jones to the NBA’s Larry Bird.

Leigh’s suggestions for crafting an initial offer with different types of opponents will be exceptionally insightful.

According to Leigh, the real heart of negotiation concerns the period between counteroffer and deal signing, where Steinberg will candidly explain how he realizes his goals without violating his principles.

This interview will be a refreshing discourse that counters Winning Through Intimidation. Be sure to check out Leigh’s book Winning with Integrity: Getting What You’re Worth Without Selling Your Soul.

Instead, Steinberg believes the most successful business dealings are not always the ones that pay the most; they are about balance, perspective, objectivity, and values.

Given the debt & alcohol issues Leigh is facing head on with full transparency — bravo!
